18th ISANH Middle East Antioxidants World Congress, Beirut Antioxidants 2017: Concluding Remarks by Pr. Richard Maroun

The 18th ISANH Middle East Antioxidants World Congress, Beirut Antioxidants 2017, was held at Saint Joseph University of Beirut, Lebanon, on May 3 and 4, 2017.

Pr. Richard Maroun, Chairman of ISANH-ME and Dean of the Faculty of sciences at Saint-Joseph University of Beirut, Pr. Marvin Edeas, Chairman of ISANH and Dr. Zeina Hobaika from the local organization committee at Saint-Joseph University of Beirut welcomed more than 150 academics and industry representatives from 13 countries at the opening ceremony which took place at the Campus of Innovation and Sport, Saint Joseph University, under the patronage of His Excellency Dr. Hussein El Hajj Hassan, Lebanese Minister of Industry and in presence of Pr. Salim Daccache, sj, Rector of Saint-Joseph University of Beirut.

The aim of this international congress was to gather all stakeholders in antioxidants field and their impact on nutrition and health. The majority of the participants came from the Middle East, Europe & Asia. All oral presentations as well as posters treated some strategic axes such as: 

  • Antioxidants & oxidative stress in health and diseases
  • Antioxidants extraction & valorization
  • Antioxidants & functional ingredients used in food & beverage industry
  • Practical applications of antioxidants in food & beverage and cosmetic industries

At the end of the second day of the meeting a round table entitled “Antioxidants applications: what is next?” took place, this was animated by Pr. Edeas, Pr. Maroun, Dr. Isabelle Castiel from L’Oréal, France and Dr. Bousslama Dorra from Agri-land, Tunisia.

Following the conclusion session, in presence of all speakers, organizers and members of the scientific committee, the meeting awards were attributed as follows:

  • Scientific Contribution Award: Dr. Fahad Al-Zadjali from Sultan Qaboos University, Oman for his talk on “Middle Eastern sleep pattern and oxidative stress”
  • Oral Presentation Contribution Award: Dr. Youakim Saliba from Saint Joseph University of Beirut, for his presentation entitled “Effect of phenolic compounds on the cardiac fibroblast phenotype: in vitro experimental study in rats”
  • Poster Presentation Contribution Award: Dr. Mona Tannoury from the Lebanese University, for his poster entitled “Antioxidant and antiproliferative effets of sargassum vulgarae from the Lebanese coast against colon cancer”
  • Innovation Prize 2017: Dr. Hiba Rajha from Saint Joseph University of Beirut for her work on “Pomegranate peels valorization: polyphenols extraction through emerging technologies”

Finally, the scientific committee and the local organizers expressed their appreciation to all participants for their excellent contributions, which made Beirut Antioxidants 2017 a huge success.
